Akuma (Gouki in Japan) is one of the more popular characters in the Street Fighter series. His first appearance in the series was in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. The kanji 'ten' character (天) - meaning "sky", "heaven", or "providence" - can be seen on the back of his gi. Capcom has stated that this symbol was meant to represent "immortality".

[edit] Story

Earning the nickname "Fist of Destiny", this demonic martial artist controls Dark Hadou energy. The man known as Akuma was once a normal martial artist and the brother of Gouken. Gouken was the instructor of Ryu and Ken Masters. Gouken and Akuma studied under a man named Master Goutetsu. Over time, Akuma became obsessed with pursuing forbidden energies in search of invulnerability. Once he found a way to harness the power of the Dark Hadou, he embarked on a wave of carnage that began with the killing of his own master. The prayer beads that Akuma wears originally belonged to Goutetsu. A red aura of pure evil emanates from Akuma's body, striking permanent fear into almost every opponent foolish enough to try facing him. Since they all trained in the same school of martial arts, Akuma's fighting style resembles Ken and Ryu's. However, the evil of the Dark Hadou further augments these moves to make them more damaging. In addition, Akuma has perfected several unique maneuvers, including his trademark, the dreaded and destructive Raging Demon.

[edit] Moral Code

Akuma fights only to test his strength and his opponent's. This means that he will only fight opponents that will provide a challenge, hence his refusal to fight unworthy challengers under any circumstances. Akuma will only kill opponents who are as strong as he, which is why he stopped his fight with Gen after realizing that he was ill. While Akuma killed his brother and his teacher, he did so in the confines of the code of the warrior, where the field of battle does not distinguish between friend or foe. Akuma believes he committed no transgression whatsoever. Also, with the exception of Gouken and Goutetsu, Akuma usually only fights those who challenge him instead of picking fights.
